Recording Gear

By Jordan Shier

Hey!

This blog post is for anyone interested in the gear we use to make these videos! This is strictly the tech we use from start to finish of a typical instagram drum video. We will make a future video on specific drum gear a bit later:

Microphones:

Kick Drum:

AKG D112  - Love this mic on kick drums & floor toms. We plan on building a sub kick out of an old NS10 monitor to grab even more of that sub bass goodness in the next month. Stay tuned for a DIY video how to wire up a sub-kick!

Snare Bottom:

Shure SM57 - Can’t really beat 57’s on snares for the price. All round essential mic that can be used on just about anything successfully. I see lots of drummers throwing mic’s up on everything BUT the snare bottom. Without this mic I definitely would be missing a huge part of my drum sound.

Snare Top:

Shure Beta 57A - Very similar to the SM57. I find it has a bit more bite and attack on my snares than the SM57 and a bit of a crisper top end. It also has better high-hat rejection than the SM 57 which is nice.

Overhead Mics:

2 X Audio Technica Pro 37 - Great sounding affordable Overheads that also sound great close miking high-hats.

Room Mic:

Beyerdynamic M160 - If I was rich I would have two of these as Overhead mics but for now I have to settle for one. Can’t say enough good things about this ribbon mic. Adds such great warmth and body to the overall drum sound while gluing it all together. We are constantly experimenting with its placement in the room. I like it right above my toms just as much as tucked in the back corner of the room laying on the floor. I need more!

Tom Mics:

I don’t currently have enough inputs for tom mic’s so I just do my best to get a great full kit drum sound. Once I upgrade to a larger system I will certainly be excited to start exploring different possibilities with the toms.

Pre-Amps & Interface

1. Black Lion Audio Auteur Preamp

Fantastic sounding duel preamp that captures tons of detail and nuance while adding a bit of vintage analog warmth. I like running my kick and snare mics through this baby.

2. Black Lion Audio God MOD Digi 003 Rack

Everything else gets plugged into the back of this little beauty. Been using it for almost 9 years and still holds up great and delivers pristine sound with unbelievable clarity. Black Lion Audio really outdid themselves with this modification. Listening to music through this interface is incredible with the great D/A conversion. Always noticing little details in the music I didn’t previously hear.

Monitors

ADAM A7

Great monitors. Been using these for 9 or so years so feel very comfortable mixing on them. The best pair of monitors is the pair you know well!

DAW

ProTools

Also have been using ProTools for over 10 years so its just the workflow I am most comfortable with. All of the DAW’s out there work great and are very similar once you find your way around. Just like monitors, the best DAW is the one you know your way around.

Camera

Sony A6500

Love this camera! Was my first step up from the GoPro 3+ so obviously floored with the quality. Cons: It does overheat after 20-30 minutes filming at 4K. The screen doesn’t flip around so it is challenging to film vlog style without an external monitor.

Lens

Sigma 30mm ART

Gorgeous fast lens with a great focal length for use in my studio. Allows me to play with depth of field all day! Huge fan of the sigma lenses as they are quite affordable for the quality. I plan on getting the 10-18mm Sony E-Mount lens next to grab some wider angle shots as well.

Thanks for checking it out! If you have any questions at all please hit us up at info@oneupdrumvids.com, instagram, facebook, or youtube!
